Kmart, the once-iconic brand, continues to slip into oblivion.
The last Michigan store in Marshall, outside of Battle Creek, will close by Nov. 21, RC Reindl of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Kmart was incorporated in 1899 in Michigan as S. S. Kresge Corporation in Michigan and renamed Kmart Corporation in 1977. From 2005 through 2019, Kmart was a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation. It is now a subsidiary of Transform SR Brands LLC in Illinois.
At the peak in the 1990s, there were more than 2,300 stores in the U.S.
Kmart opened its first store in Garden City in 1962. Now, there are 17 stores in the U.S., according to the New York Times.
