A preliminary examination set for Thursday for Carlos Lamar Scotland, 18, of Higland Park, was adjourned so he can undergo a competency examination to stand trial.
Scott is accused of fatally shooting Asia Davis, 36, a transgender woman of color, in Highland Park last year, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.
“Ms. Davis was a transgender woman of color who was murdered on the first day of Pride Month on June 1, 2023," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement. "She was beloved in her community and was known to be a generous and compassionate person according to her family and many friends. At the time of her death, she had recently completed nursing school and was going to start a new job when her life was tragically cut short."
On June 1, 2023, around 11:00 p.m., Highland Park police were dispatched to the Woodward Inn hotel in the 16300 block of Woodward Avenue where they found the victim dead inside a room with a gunshot wound to her head, authorities said.
Authorities allege that Scotland fired a handgun at Davis before fleeing the scene. He was arrested last month following an extensive investigation by the Michigan State Police.
He faces charges of first-degree murder, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and resisting and obstructing a police officer. The next hearing is set for July 16 at Highland Park's 30th District Court.
