Detroit's Nearly 2,000 Restaurants To Post Color-Coded Food Safety Signs Near Entrance Beginning Today

October 01, 2024, 2:22 PM by  Allan Lengel

Beginning Tuesday, more than 1,900 of Detroit's licensed restauants will display color-coded safety placards near the entrance to let customers know if the restaurants comply with food safety inspections by the Detroit Health Department.

In June, the Detroit City Council passed the "Dining with Confidence" ordinance "to increase visibility and transparency regarding Food Safety Inspections," according to the city website. It's the first of its kind in Michigan.

City officials hope it provides an incentive for restaurants to meet health standards.

A green placard representing compliance means there are either no serious violations or they've been corrected, and the restaurant has a valid food service license.

A red card means the restaurant has been ordered closed due to severe health hazards or failing to obtain or renew a license, or having its license suspended or revoked. Restaurants that are not in compliance following an initial inspection will lose their green card and must schedule a follow-up iwithin 30 days. If they fail to show compliance at the follow-up inspection, the restaurant will get a red card and shut down.

A white placard means restaurants have not yet to be inspected or have yet qualified for the green placard. It will contain information about the Dining with Confidence program.
